Planning for Your Pets

Many of us have pets that are more like members of the family. If something happened to us, we would want a friend or family member to care for the pet, but we don’t want to burden them with pet expenses.

Legally, we can’t leave money to the pet directly. We can name a caretaker, but if we give money outright to the caregiver, we can’t be 100% sure they aren’t going to drop the pet at the pound and pocket the money. There is a way to prevent this potential outcome. You can leave a trust for your pet’s care so your designated trustee can make sure the expenses are legitimate and the pet is well cared for. Whether the pets live for another decade or a week, you can be sure the money you leave would protect your pet, and any leftover money would go to your human or charitable beneficiaries.

As a horse owner, I know that horse expenses can add up. I want to make sure that if something happens to me, my horses are well cared for, and their expenses are covered. We’ll make sure to ask you about your plans for your pets!
